Intensive care medicine or critical care medicine is a branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis and management of life-threatening conditions requiring sophisticated organ support and invasive monitoring under expert observation.

Intensive care is the medical speciality that supports patients whose lives are in immediate danger – like when a vital organ such as the heart, liver, lungs, kidneys or the nervous system is affected. Without treatment and adapted monitoring and surveillance, the consequences of these kinds of illnesses can be detrimental to our health and the situation life-threatening.

A patient's faulty vital organs must be brought into balance during intensive care before they can go to a different speciality.

To maintain or replace the function of organs, patients admitted into ICUs require complex treatments and constant surveillance. To ensure this specific level of care, the ICU has a team of highly qualified staff and the latest and abundant medical equipment.
